Handloom and art have been my interest forever. They are something you pass on generations as a sign of love and heritage. And so, I decided to combine these two and bring to you…
‘Art you can drape’
I did my English(Hons) and LLB and started working in Law sector. It was after my marriage that I wasn’t able to work full time but being married in the army opened up a new world for me. We visited the most beautiful places across India and I got a chance to explore the culture and their art. It was then that I started exploring traditional art and I fell in love with it.
Its intriguing how each one of them are so different and unique and intricate in their own beautiful way! I never shied away from learning them whenever I got the chance and opportunity. And I loved doing these paintings on my own… be it notebook, garden walls, tablecloths or my sarees or dupattas.
It was during COVID that the idea of starting something of my own came to me. And it had to be something that I was truly passionate about – it was traditional Indian art and the beautiful handlooms of India. I wanted to give myself a chance and I had the perfect opportunity to see if it would work!
I aimed to display my work at the exhibition in Diwali mela in the Cantonment area.
I started working day and night and hand painted a few sarees and dupattas for the exhibition. It was my first time displaying my work and the kind of response I received was overwhelming!
It’s been one year since and it has been quite a journey! Gradually I have managed to make a very small team and I am proud of the fact that I get to showcase the work of these artists. Though I still prefer doing the customized orders myself but I manage to give them some work too and create some kind of employment! It has been a very fulfilling journey…
With the brand name Little Things by Preeya, I have a bigger dream of creating an awareness about these dying traditional art forms by keeping them alive. With the brand I would want to create a team with the most talented artists. It is my way of giving back to the wonderful teachers that I learnt this art from and to the society.
